The Journey to Liberation

To create safe space for brave action we will begin by introducing two sets of agreements that support the internal struggles and external dynamics which oftentimes inhibit conversations about sensitive topics. Participants will then be introduced the Journey to Liberation which will help build knowledge and confidence to address a crucial issue of our time—identity, race, and equity. Participants will use the restorative questions as a foundation for facilitating and navigating the complexities of understanding and conversing about the impacts of the most difficult of these issues - race. They will understand why this is so hard and be able to converse with others about fears and hopes for addressing racial identity. Everyone will have an opportunity to explore the history of education and families in the United States and how experiences differ based on race and cultural identity including ways this shows up for us today. All will engage in considering the 5 Pillars of Courageous Family Leadership and how structured goal setting and and intentionality can help all families approach difficult conversations, tackle challenging historical truths and consider how they will develop individual and collective cultural proficiency through a reflective approach to understanding how families have contributed to the development and perpetuation of biases, stereotypes and micro aggressive actions at school, work and home. They'll engage in large- and small-group discussions that provide them with a blend of context, content, and competencies around engaging in conversations on race, identity and American racism. Included in this session will be the 4 types of reflection, introspection and planning opportunities that every family should engage in annually to remain focused on their individual and collective Journey to Liberation. Finally the session will round out with 10 considerations for Courageous Leadership that all can begin to implement where we live, learn and earn.
